Underwater Hockey: What's it all about?
The Basics:
Underwater hockey is a non-contact sport, which is
already quite different to its land-based counterpart, it consists of two teams
attempting to manoeuvre a puck along the bottom of the floor of a swimming pool
into the opponents' goal. Players must wear a diving mask along with fins and a
snorkel as well as some other personal protective equipment such as mouth-guard,
gloves, head caps and others. The Puck weighs in at 1.5kg and is made of
lead-coated in a plastic covering. The weight of the puck means that it will
naturally gravitate to the bottom of the pool however during passes the puck
can be lifted off the bottom of the pool.
The Rules:
So then, what is Underwater Hockey and how does
that even work? Well, Underwater Hockey or sometimes referred to (Mainly in the
UK) as octopush has:
- The game has a total of 12 players with 10
active players.
- The players are broken down into three
categories, pool, bench and reserved.
- The team selects a set of 5 of their 6 players
with 3 the pool and 2 in the bench that can be subbed in at any
time.
- The game has 2 halves that are 15 minutes long
and a 3 minute half time with each team being allowed an additional
1-minute second timeout per game.
- Teams start at each end of the pool with the main objective being to score the 1.5kg puck into the opposing team's goal.
- There are a few more rules to the game but I
think we can all get the picture of how it works here.
